Remake of Elegant Topo (2020)
Charles, a retired man, gets a new lease on life when he answers a private investigator ad and becomes a mole in a secret investigation into a nursing home. Michael Schur was inspired to create “A Man On the Inside” after watching the Chilean documentary “The Mole Agent.” He says: The documentary “The Mole Agent” is powerful because it makes people feel something remarkably similar regardless of age, ethnicity, or gender, and I would describe that feeling very reductively as “I have to call my mother.” In our show, we tried to do a similar thing with the tone: basically, our show contributes to that feeling of making us want to call our mothers?.
Before you know it, you’re so invested that you just have to know who did it!
Since we’re being honest, I’ll admit that at first I wasn’t sure if the show would interest me in the slightest, but somehow it managed to draw me in. All the characters are so easy to love and so relatable to have in your life.
My favorite quote from the show is “Every great thing in your life, looking back on it, seems like a miracle” Very poetic because it resonates with all of us
It’s also a gentle reminder that we’re all here to try to do the same thing, live and enjoy life, so we might as well do our best to get along and most of all be kind to each other. I will also admit that it was a little weird seeing Ted Danson in that role, especially when you’re used to him as the Cheers character “Sam”; but pretty soon “Charles” tugs at your heartstrings without leaving any sad memories of “Sam.” A bittersweet, yet tender reminder that Father Time doesn’t play favorites.
It’s a nice change of pace, that leaves no guilt for enjoying another “cop” show
I hope you watch it and recognize and understand the daily challenges that some in our society, in our lives, deal with on a daily basis.
